FAQ / STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Tire questions

The things people ask at the counter, answered plainly. Don't see yours? Call (909) 321-2191.

The shop

Do I need an appointment?

Booking a time is the surest way in. You can also call (909) 321-2191 and ask how the day looks.

Can I bring tires I bought online?

Yes. Book mount and balance and tell us the size and quantity.

Do you sell used tires?

Yes. We carry some used take-off tires in limited sizes. Call for what's on hand today, and ask us to price new tires in the same size so you can compare.

Do you do brakes or oil changes?

No. We work on tires and wheels only: wheel alignment, flat tire repair, tire rotation, TPMS service, tire inspection, mount and balance and road force balancing. We don't do brakes, oil changes, wheel repair or auto parts. For anything else you'll want a general repair shop.

Do you install tires, or just sell them?

We install them. Tires bought here are mounted, balanced and put on your car in our bays. Bought tires somewhere else? Book mount and balance and we'll install those too.

What time do you close?

Monday to Friday 8 AM to 6 PM, Saturday 8 AM to 5 PM, closed Sunday. 5483 Moreno Street, Montclair.

How do I find my tire size?

It's printed on the sidewall as width, aspect ratio and rim diameter, for example 225/65R17. The sticker inside the driver's door lists the sizes the manufacturer fitted.

Why is my TPMS light on?

The tire pressure monitoring system has seen a tire below its set pressure, or a sensor fault. Check pressures first. If the light stays on, book TPMS service.

Can my flat tire be repaired?

It depends on where the damage is and how big it is. Punctures in the tread up to 1/4 inch usually can be. The tire comes off the wheel and gets inspected inside before any repair.

Wheel alignment

How often should I get an alignment?

Check it once a year, any time you buy tires, and after any hard hit to a curb or pothole. If the car pulls or the wheel sits crooked, don't wait for the calendar.

Can an alignment fix a pull?

Usually. But a pull can also come from a tire with an internal defect, uneven pressures or a dragging brake. We check pressures and tires first so you're not paying for the wrong fix.

Flat tire repair

Can you fix a tire that has a nail in the sidewall?

No. Sidewalls flex constantly and a repair there won't hold. Nobody should repair it. The tire needs to be replaced.

Is a plug from the outside safe?

It can get you to a shop. As a permanent repair it doesn't meet the industry standard, because nobody has looked inside the tire.

Tire rotation

Is rotation really necessary?

If you want the most miles out of a set, yes. Skip it and you'll usually replace the fronts early while the rears still have tread left.

Can you rotate staggered tires?

Side to side, sometimes. Front to back, no, because the sizes are different. Directional staggered tires can't rotate at all.

TPMS service

Is it safe to drive with the TPMS light on?

Check your pressures as soon as you can. If a tire is low, fill it to the door-placard number. If the light stays on, book TPMS service. A low tire overheats, wears out early and handles worse.

Why does my TPMS light come on in the morning and go off later?

Cold air drops the pressure overnight, and the drive warms it back up. It means at least one tire is sitting close to the warning threshold. Top them off.

Tire inspection

How do I check my own tread?

Put a penny into a groove with Lincoln's head upside down. If you can see the top of his head, you're near 2/32 and due for tires. A quarter does the same test at about 4/32 using Washington's head.

How old is too old for a tire?

Tire and vehicle makers' guidance varies. Many say to have tires inspected every year after five years, and to replace them at around ten no matter how much tread is left. Heat speeds up aging, and the Inland Empire has plenty of it.

Mount and balance

Will you install tires I bought online?

Yes. Book mount and balance and tell us the tire size and how many you're bringing.

How often should tires be balanced?

Any time a tire is mounted or repaired, and whenever you feel a vibration that wasn't there before. Some drivers rebalance at every other rotation.

Road force balancing

What's the difference between balancing and road force balancing?

Standard balancing corrects weight. Road force balancing also measures stiffness and roundness under load, and fixes them with match mounting where possible.

Do I need road force balancing on every set of tires?

No. Most vehicles are fine with a standard balance. It's the right tool for persistent vibrations, low-profile tires and sensitive vehicles.
